BigQuery API
BigQuery API
Google BigQuery API is the REST interface to GCP's flagship data warehouse — execute SQL queries, manage datasets/tables, stream inserts, and use built-in ML.
Fully serverless — no cluster management
Pay-per-bytes-scanned — unoptimized queries can get expensive
Enable BigQuery API and create a service account in GCP Console. POST /bigquery/v2/projects/{projectId}/queries to submit SQL.

About this API
BigQuery is GCP's data warehouse, competing with Snowflake/Redshift/Databricks SQL. Launched in the early 2010s, it's a cloud-warehouse pioneer. Its defining feature is full serverlessness — no cluster concept; submit a query and it runs, billed by bytes scanned. This pay-per-use model is great for spiky workloads but may not pencil out for sustained high load (Reserved Slots offers fixed-capacity pricing). Another killer feature is BigQuery ML — train and deploy ML models in pure SQL (CREATE MODEL ... AS SELECT ...) without exporting data. Also supports GEO (spatial), ARRAY/STRUCT nested types, JSON functions, and other advanced features. Mainstream choice for analytics, BI, and ML warehousing workloads.
What you can build
- 1Run analytical SQL over petabyte-scale data
- 2Stream-insert real-time event data
- 3Run machine learning predictions via BigQuery ML
- 4Data warehouse ETL pipeline integration
Strengths & limitations
Strengths
- Fully serverless — no cluster management
- Native BigQuery ML (run ML via SQL)
- Separated storage and compute — pay per query bytes scanned
- Deep integration with GCP ecosystem (Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Looker)
Limitations
- Pay-per-bytes-scanned — unoptimized queries can get expensive
- Limited row-level updates/deletes (not designed for OLTP)
- Cold-data query latency lags behind self-managed Snowflake
Example request
curl https://google.com/<endpoint>Getting started
Enable BigQuery API and create a service account in GCP Console. POST /bigquery/v2/projects/{projectId}/queries to submit SQL.
FAQ
How are query costs estimated?+
$5 / TB scanned. SELECT * over a wide table is expensive — proper column selection and partition/cluster design can save 10-100x.
How to choose between BigQuery and Snowflake?+
GCP-native: BigQuery. Multi-cloud or AWS-primary: Snowflake. BigQuery ML is the killer feature; Snowflake wins on concurrency.
Can it handle OLTP?+
No. BigQuery is OLAP — row-level UPDATE/DELETE is slow and rate-limited. Use Cloud SQL or Spanner for OLTP.
