Definition
A system prompt is a set of instructions given to a language model before the user conversation begins. It defines the model's persona, behavior, constraints, and knowledge. Products built on LLMs use system prompts to customize the base model — turning a general assistant into a coding helper, customer service agent, or specific persona. Users typically cannot see the system prompt.
